Workshop Four: Still Life Context

WITHIN WORKSHOP

For the triptych taken in the workshop, we decided to have the correlation between the images with the black background and the use of flowers. All of the images have been altered in their own way including other objects that generally wouldn’t be associated with the subject. The use of the black background was difficult for photographing especially when we included white flowers and we did have issues with exposure. I feel the variety of images with the correlation of the flower images against the dark background work well especially with the use of the light coming from inside the house. I felt that particular image’s lighting stands out and although it looks different to the other two photos, I feel it was an effective way to manipulate lighting within the frame.

OUT OF WORKSHOP

These were the found objects obtained. The correlating feature was the background of the image and the blue bag ensuring the blue bag was presented in a different way for each photo. The idea of the litter and graffiti manipulated for the photo highlights the norm it is to see common objects in every day life yet we would never consider photographing them.

RESEARCH

Laurie Frankel

In Frankel’s ‘Recycled Beauty’ project, she looks at finding the beauty of ordinary things that we discard contrasting them with nature with Dianne Gatterdam.

Laurie’s work influenced my own outside the workshop as it inspired me with the idea of taking objects found everyday discarded as also done in her own project but putting them together to create an image that is interesting to photograph. The ideas behind this demonstrate how every object can construct a photograph even if it’s something on its own we may not find interesting or appealing to the eye.
