Final Project: Research and All Images

RESEARCH

Maggie West

“I really love the idea of essentially painting with light because it allows me to essentially recolor reality however I see fit.”

Coloured lighting within portraiture is the main aspect that interests me that I wish to include in my final project. Maggie West is a photographer and installation artist based in Los Angles. These images were taken from her projects including STAND// Planned Parenthood Benefit and KISS//Sunset Boulevard Billboard.

“I took portraits of L.A.-based creatives, including models, musicians, actors, and all kinds of cool people who stand with and support Planned Parenthood.”

Below are the main images where the colour combinations stand out to me which I may recreate during my shoot.

Brandon Woelfel

“I’m always inspired by unique styles. For so long I kind of got into my own niche of editing and I guess that kept evolving into something that it is right now. It’s always going to keep evolving and changing.”

I have already discussed Woelfel’s work within my portraiture research, however I am still interested with the styling of his products and the coloured lighting aspect is well explored within his work. Above displays more of his images and although I will be looking at using two colours within the photo, his work is still useful for the framing of the image and the colours that work well together.

GEOFF JONES

These images from Geoff Jones were taken from the ‘Transcendence Series’, ‘Beauty’ and ‘My Stuff’ and I was interested in his use of lighting within these images shown. I feel the balance between colours highlights parts of the portrait in a way I find interesting and would be an effective way to show division. These images have provided me the idea of using different colours within sets of photos to not necessarily provide division just in that colour photography, but will be divided by the next portrait photo using a different set of colours.

Mary Kuzmenkova

These images were taken rom the ‘Sensually- Lit Fallen Angels’ collection where women are lit with coloured lighting to convey emotion with an underlying seductive tone. The lighting of the red and green captured on the woman’s face on the top right images work effectively as a portrait shot which I may use within my work.

ALL IMAGES

For my studio shoot, I used a white background with no light on the background as I wanted the lighting focus to be on the subjects. I used a variety of coloured gels over two LED lights to create the coloured effect. For the settings of the shots, I had a low ISO of 200, 1/160 shutter speed, aperture of F10 and Single Shooting which worked well for the shoot. All of these settings were kept the same as i wanted to capture each portrait in a very similar way set up wise simply changing the position and lighting colour.
